Edie Huggins, One of the First: NOT the First

What do you do when the urban radio and music scene is kind of dead? When the celebs aren't acting a fool, you dig for other stuff and you start thinking... wait a minute that's not true. Black America Web is reporting that TV reporter Edie Huggins was the first African American woman to report the news...huh... really? I did some internet diggin'.

Edie Huggins died yesterday at age 72. Here's WCAU TV's tribute to "Miss Edie". She was a reporter and anchor for over 40 years in Philadelphia. She used her position to make a positive contribution to the community. ...but I started thinking... what about Trudy Haynes at KYW TV?

Here's Trudy interviewing a tired Queen Latifah

What did I find? Trudy Haynes became the first black in the United States to broadcast the weather on television, when she was hired by WXYZ-TV in 1963, the ABC affiliate in Detroit. Two years later, she became the first black American to report the news on a television station: KYW-TV. Edie Huggins, was a nurse living in New York City, who became an actress on the soap opera "The Doctors" in 1965. She was hired to be a reporter and anchor at WCAU-TV in 1966.

From an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer today: During an interview two years ago, when the city declared "Edie Huggins Day" to celebrate her 40th year with the station, the reporter, known for her humility and disarming candor, said she was hired despite an embarrassing lack of on-air experience. The reason, she said, was not so much that she had wowed the station manager, but that WCAU was competing against the NBC affiliate (at the time KYW was an NBC affiliate and WCAU was a CBS affiliate), which had just hired its first black woman reporter, Trudy Haynes.

What's the point? Edie Huggins was one of the first African Americans to report the news. Of course it sounds better to write, "she was the first" -- Wouldn't that make you want to read the story? Why did Black America Web write a, if not sensational, clearly inaccurate headline? Besides, in her own words, Edie Huggins wanted to be remembered as "Someone Who Cared."

T.I. and Respect My Vote

T.I. talks about his get out the vote effort. the full interview of T.I. on Good Day Philadelphia where he talks about his 'Respect My Vote' effort. T.I. has joined forces with The Hip Hop Caucus to launch a powerful new voter registration campaign that combines the power of celebrity and media with 21st century grassroots organizing tactics to mobilize and educate young people between the ages of 18 and 29, who are not in college.

T.I. comes off in this interview as a guy who really should have known better than to get caught up in the mess, (the gun charges) he did earlier this year.

Picking the Next Tavis Smiley

Walking down Mr. Black America's path to fame may lead to the same trap.

A talent show is underway to select Tavis Smiley's replacement on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show."
It was inevitable that this process would come down to a series of on-air, laugh-out-loud challenges rivaling American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance?
Perhaps it's the spirit of equal opportunity or the clarity of competition, but nothing rallies a crowd of black folks to a cause or generates more wholesale attention, than the business of putting on a talent show.

Black Radio on the left versus Conservative radio on the right

Black Radio on Obama; Is Left’s Answer to Limbaugh

Warren Ballentine, one of black talk radio’s new stars, was on a tear against Senator John McCain as he broadcast from the Greenbriar Mall (Atlanta) here last week, blithely dismissing Mr. McCain’s kind words about Senator Barack Obama at the recent N.A.A.C.P. national convention.

“He came out talking about how good of a race Barack Obama was running, and how proud he was of Barack,” Mr. Ballentine said. “You know he went back home and said, ‘I can’t believe I spoke in front of all those Negroes today!’ ” Read More>>

K-Swift Remembered

The thousands of fans who filed into Morgan State University's auditorium for Khia Edgerton's funeral yesterday could recite her accomplishments: recording artist, radio personality, leader of an underground music movement. But during the two-hour music-filled ceremony, those fans learned how Edgerton rose from spinning records in her family's Randallstown basement to become "K-Swift," leader of Baltimore's club music scene. The story is a by-the-book lesson on the value of hard work. "She's didn't talk about building an entertainment empire - she just did it," said Marc Clarke, of radio station 92Q, where Edgerton was the first female DJ. "She didn't talk about losing 170 pounds. She just did it. And she didn't rely on a man to build her dreams. ... She didn't bat her eyes." Read more>>

Jay-Z Keeps it Real, Fo'Real

Jay-Z explains the hood life: ‘I think it’s more important for me to be in touch with who I am than in touch with the streets, per se,’ he says. ‘Being in touch with the streets, keeping it real, that’s become a lie and a cliche. I’m not hanging on the corner in the Bed-Stuy. I hate it when rappers say, “I’m keeping it ‘hood.” I’m like, “Why? What do you mean? No one’s there by choice! You’re in the hood, by choice?”‘

Bling he feels was misinterpreted by the media as tasteless showing off, when really it was a celebration of success by people who had enjoyed precious little of that before. ‘These people came from nothing,’ he says. ‘No-thing. The bottom. And when they got money and cars and houses it was a party.

Sean "Diddy" Combs is giving marriage a chance. The bachelor father of six is quietly telling close friends and family that he and singer Cassandra "Cassie" Ventura are heading to the chapel. "He told everyone to keep it extremely quiet because he didn't want it to get out, but you could tell he was excited," says a source. Clear Channel Shareholders Vote to Go Private

Clear Channel Communications announced today that, based on a preliminary vote count, Clear Channel shareholders approved the merger agreement with a group led by Bain Capital Partners, LLC and Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P.

The number of shares voted in favor of the transaction represented more than 74 percent of the total shares outstanding and entitled to vote. The preliminary tabulation indicates that approximately 97 percent of the shares voted were cast in favor of the transaction. The parties intend to consummate the merger on July 30, according to a statement.

It's Amazing, as President Bush's presidency winds down, this Texas based company, that has wrecked havoc on the radio industry with its 1200+ stations it owns, will no longer be a publicly traded company. How has it wrecked havoc? Clear Channel has had a great influence on what's played on the radio, the news we hear, and the lack of a commitment to the African American community.

Bill Cosby responds to Terrence Howard's Allegations

Bill Cosby called web host and entertainment reporter Lee Bailey to set the record straight regarding allegations that he once tried to blackball/blacklist actor Terrence Howard. "I don't like something being out there that I know for sure isn't true," said Cosby, explaining his reason for contacting Eurweb.com.

Howard was quoted as saying he confronted Cosby to ask why his small guest role on "The Cosby Show" ended up on the editing room floor. Howard explained: “I told him, ‘I’m a man just like you.’ He didn’t like it, and the casting agent never took my calls again.” Howard said he didn't get another Hollywood gig for the next four years. FCC Is Ready to Approve the XM/Sirius Deal

Chairman Kevin Martin tells the Wall Street Journal they've got "an agreement in principle". The companies just issued a press release on the outlines of a consent decree.

XM would pay about $17 million and Sirius another $2 million, and they'd both deal with "variant terrestrial repeaters" and non-compliant radios still owned by consumers. (This means which receiver is going to work, the XM receiver you bought or the Sirius receiver that your friend has.)

The crucial vote, from FCC comissioner, Deborah Taylor Tate, has been hanging since yesterday, but word has it Tate will vote "yes" after winning the concessions she wants. Martin admits "we're still trying to work out the language" of the settlement - which appears to exact tougher conditions from XM than from Sirius.

Omarosa and Wendy Go at It!

Omarosa fronts and signifies on Wendy Williams (...did she actually call Wendy a buffoon and a fake... dang), then Wendy has to remind her whose show it is.

As far as the show goes, it's getting a Six Week Sneak Peak in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Detroit, as it's quickly becoming must see TV. Why? For the simple fact that Wendy is a personality that has mastered the ability of relating to the audience. Aw-right. It doesn't hurt that she has developed a following on the radio. If Tempestt Bledsoe, Ananda Lewis, and Queen Latifah can get a talk show, why not Wendy?

Jocko Maxwell - The First Black Sportscaster Dies

Sherman “Jocko” Maxwell – whom many called “the first black sports broadcaster”, died at age 100 in West Chester, PA. He made his career in the New York/New Jersey area while he was working for the Post Office in Newark, and he convinced people like WNJ station owner Herman Lubinsky to let him talk about sports, starting in 1929. His later show on WRNY (says the New York Times) was called “Runs, Hits and Errors” – and he gets credit for helping to preserve boxscores and other details of the onetime Negro leagues, and especially the Newark Eagles. Maxwell was on the air somewhere in the New York metro until 1967. He also wrote up the games of the Eagles and other African American teams and sold them to newspapers. Maxwell contributed to the authoritative Baseball Digest and helped chronicle what the Times calls “the other teams” who played in major league ballparks – the black teams. They’re talking about Jocko here. From T-R-I -7/21/08

Disappering Voices - The Decline of Black Radio

“Disappearing Voices – The Decline of Black Radio”New film on the decreasing numbers of Black owned radio stationsVeteran radio broadcaster Bob Law has partnered with independent film director U-Savior and Black Waxx Multimedia, Inc. to produce a new documentary film that explores the realities of Black radio ownership. At the time of the making of the film the U.S. Census Bureau reported that out of 10,315 commercial AM and FM radio stations in the United States, only 168 are Black-owned – and even that number is declining. Most of those 168 are owned by Radio One.

The film claims: ... in the late 1960’s a shift began when Madison Avenue started realizing just how much influence Black radio had over its audience. White-owned stations featuring Black disc jockeys got scared that these jocks were becoming bigger than the station itself and therefore in the position to demand more money. Thus, in the 1970’s something called “urban contemporary” came into being, co-opting Black music and phasing out Black radio in favor of a supposedly colorless society.

We respectfully disagree with this point. Legendary disc jockey Frankie Crocker coined the phrase and format "urban contemporary" at WBLS in New York in the 1970's to distinguish itself from the soul music radio heard on AM radio. Most people listened to AM radio back then and that was his hook to get listeners to switch over to the under used radio band called "FM ". This format was copied all over the United States by both Black and white owned stations playing Black music. The film is being shown in and around the New York City-New Jersey metro area. It will also be shown at upcoming African American film festivals in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and in Germany. -7/9/08

Let Bernie Mac be Bernie Mac

Barack Obama tells Bernie Mac after his comedy routine at a $2,300 per person fundraiser in Chicago: “We can't afford to be divided by religion, or by region or class. Or by gender," Obama said and joked, "That means, by the way, Bernie you got to clean up your act. This is a family affair. I'm just messing with you!”

I can't believe this. These are jokes people. This is comedy.

Everybody is running around apologizing for this or that... or better yet disassociating themselves from statements. Obama is distancing himself from a comedy routine.

This is the stupidest ish I've ever heard. Obama is now denoucing a comedian. LMAO

After the fundraiser a spokesman from the Obama campaign said, “Senator Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate."

That fundraiser was not 'The Bernie Mac Show". This was Bernie Mac RAW.

Here's the Bernie Mac I know.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC4ul_FYnlQ

www.youtube.com/watch?v=RviYo3WsqjU

The jokes in my opinion were pretty damn funny. If you don't have a sense of humor then I'm sure you won't feel that they were funny.

During the 10-minute introduction, Bernie Mac was heckled and asked to step down from the stage.

Some of the jokes:

#1- "Being a president is tough ‘cause you're not just running the country. You got to run your family too," "Having a black first lady is different. You're still going have to do the dishes and the laundry and all that …you got to pick up the kids. You didn't pick up the kids? I just came from Korea, talking about nuclear weapons. You were on Air Force One and you couldn't stop to pick up the kids?"

#2- “People like rumors. They are going to say things like, you know, you was in the club with Lil’ Kim and you and Kanye West got in a fist fight.”

#3- "My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?"' "I said, I don't know, but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000."'
"Hypothetically speaking, we should have $100,000. But realistically speaking we live with two hos,"

That's some funny ish.

Now just because you paid $2,300, that does not mean you can't be offended. Your stupid azz shouldn't have paid that much money if you couldn't afford to laugh.

One last thing: Why didn't they invite Wayne Brady instead?

What was Jesse Jackson Thinking About

Is Jesse getting senile? I mean he had to know the mic was on. Then to make the comment at Fox News... well of all of the channels for this to happen on, it happens at Fox. Hmmmm...

Was he set up or did he know what he was doing? He came out and apologized for something most folks didn't even know or was aware of prior to the apology. Is Jesse that slick? Maybe. Did Jesse put himself out there to bring attention to the whole issue of talking down to the African American community? How dare Obama talk down to African American men in a Black church he was just visiting! Is that the problem Jesse?

Maybe Jesse was upset because Obama comments about African American fathers taking care of their children hit home. Maybe a little too close to home.

Maybe Jesse was going to cut off something that he hoped Obama would use. It seems Obama is not using any of his testicular power at the moment. Obama seems to be taking the middle of the road stance on most issues lately, changing his position, and pandering to a voting block who is definitely leaning towards McCain.

Just maybe Jesse was thinking if he ain't gonna use them, I might as well cut 'em off.

By the way, we can't be that naive to think that Rev. Jackson and most other politicians haven't said much worse behind closed doors and off the record. (Jesse did run for president, so that makes him a politician.) Does that make it right? No. It's just the dirty game we call politics.
