WPUL Radio commercial: Democrats need to spend more Ad Dollars with Black Media

1590 WPUL in Daytona Beach began running ads Monday criticizing the Democratic Party for ignoring Black voters. Black-owned radio stations and newspapers have complained to the Florida Democratic Party about the lack of political ads placed in black-owned media. A lack of response prompted the radio ads on 1590 AM (WPUL), said Charles W. Cherry II, publisher of The Florida Courier, a statewide black newspaper.

"If you want to win by getting black people to vote in the state of Florida, you must actively engage the black community's political culture. A large part of this culture is black-owned media," said Cherry, whose family owns 11 radio stations and two newspapers.

FCC will have a problem if Barack Obama appears alone at the debate tonight

John McCain blows off a David Letterman appearance, suspending his campaign in order to solve the economic problems. BUT he is really down the hall getting makeup for a CBS Evening News interview with Katie Couric

If John McCain doesn’t show up in Oxford, Mississippi this evening for the long-planned first of three presidential debates, broadcasters who air a solo-event featuring Democrat hopeful Sen. Barack Obama answering questions could be subject to the FCC’s equal opportunities rule if pressed by the McCain campaign. So says David Oxenford, a partner with the D.C. law firm of Davis, Wright and Tremaine, LLP, in his Broadcast Law Blog.

The internet will run out of addresses by 2010

Why is this computer so sl-o-o-o-o-o-o-w

The world is about to run out of the internet addresses that allow computers to identify each other and communicate. Vint Cerf, the “father of the internet” and one of the world’s leading computer scientists, said that businesses and consumers needed to act now to switch to the next generation of net addresses. Unless preparations were made now, he said, some computers might not be able to go online and the connectivity of the internet might be damaged. Read more >>

New technology will need to be put in place soon. A new system, called IPv6, has been ready for implementation for more than a decade. It will provide 340,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 addresses. It is assumed that this will meet humanity’s needs for decades to come.

What is Hip Hop and is it a Dead End for Imaging?

If it wasn't for Lil' Wayne, what would urban radio be playing right now? Is it me or is every other song on urban radio a Lil' Wayne song? Hip Hop must be Lil' Wayne. He not only got it, he is IT right now.

Now as far as radio imaging goes; Is it time to retire "The Most Hip Hop and R&B", "Bangin' Hip Hop and R&B", "Interactive Hip Hop and R&B"? Even the"Hits and Hip Hop" stations are more rhythmic than urban. The radio industry and the PPM rating system is making that imaging become stale and unattractive for listeners. It's time for a fresh approach to imaging across the board. Are radio stations beginning to abandon it? I hardly hear it any more. Take a good listen. What will urban radio use next for imaging into the 2010's?

E-mails about Obama are false

There's no such thing as an “Obama Blue Day” on September 30th.

The latest email: Please, please, please advise everyone you know that they absolutely can NOT go to the polls wearing any Obama (or whoever you are voting for) shirts, pins, hats, etc. It is AGAINST THE LAW and will be grounds to have the polling officials to turn you away. This is considered campaigning and no one can campaign within X amount of feet of the polls. They are banking on us being overly excited and not being aware of this long standing law that you can bet will be ENFORCED THIS YEAR!!!!!

This is totally false.

Google reveals a new phone: "The G1"

But will it have a radio?

The first cell phone running Google Inc.’s mobile software looks something like Apple Inc.’s iPhone and has a large touch screen, but it also packs a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google’s e-mail and mapping programs.
Google made its debut as a cell phone software provider at an event where wireless carrier T-Mobile said it will begin selling the G1 phone for $179 with a two-year contract. The device hits U.S. stores Oct. 22 and heads to Britain in November and other European countries early next year. The phone will be sold in T-Mobile stores only in the U.S. cities where the company has rolled out its faster, third-generation wireless data network.

The Google phone, like Apple’s iPhone, features a touchscreen and can run a variety of open source applications.

Good news for Rhapsody, Still No news for Pandora

From All Access- Radio and Internet Editor Paul Maloney has read the fine print of the announcement of a royalty deal and concluded that the agreement doesn't cover Internet Radio's royalty rate at all. The agreement between DiMA (Digital Media Association) and several music industry groups solely covers mechanicals for on-demand services, such as streaming and "limited download" services. They will basically have to pay 10.5% of their revenue. He says, "It’s about services like Rhapsody in which listeners can request a specific song right now.

Net radio interests currently pay two performance royalties (one to publishers/composers and the other to recording copyright owners/performers), they are not liable for "mechanical" rights (the reproduction of recordings).

Bottom line: Net radio parties such as Pandora are still on the hook for royalty rates that could threaten their very existence. Those services spend almost 90% of their revenue towards performance and recording royalities.

Anyway I hope this site's music player widget, which operates like Pandora, will continue.

Clear Channel spends more than a million dollars a month

Would you like to work for Clear Channel? Maybe you might consider being a lobbyist. Clear Channel spent $1.2 million in the second quarter on Washington lobbying.

Fight the Sirius XM merger had to be first on their list. WHAT else could they be lobbying for? Helping Congress to look the other way when they became a private company, relaxing the radio ownership rules, easing up on broadcast indecency rules, and working on greater diversity in ownership. Diversity? How about some diversity in programming Clear Channel? Let's see it's not just Steve Harvey and Keith Sweat all over the place, it's Rush Limbaugh and Ryan Seacrest who have Clear Channel owned Premiere Network syndicated deals too.

Monie Love back on the air

Monie Love was back on the air in Philadelphia this past weekend on Power 99 (WUSL). She has not had a regular shift since January 2007 at crosstown rival 100.3 The Beat (WPHI). Monie had been making some guest apprearances with Ed Lover on Power 105.1 in New York since then. Ed Gordon was PAID!!! not by BET, but by National Public Radio

In '05, NPR Paid Gordon $478,000 to Host "News & Notes"

When National Public Radio replaced Ed Gordon in 2006 as host of its daily "News And Notes" hour, it removed one of it's most highly paid host for that fiscal year, according to a tax form filed by NPR. Ed Gordon was Number 4 on its list of the highest paid hosts. He earned $232,932, and he was compensated an additional $245,525 in benefits, the form states.

Gordon, who came to prominence as host of BET News and securing the first and only interview of OJ Simpson following his acquittal in the murder trial of his wife and her friend. "News And Notes With Ed Gordon" debuted in January 2005 after the sudden departure of Tavis Smiley. Gordon stayed until September 2006 after he complained about the show's treatment by NPR. Gordon questioned NPR's ability to connect with African Americans. Gordon now hosts the weekly syndicated "Our World With Black Enterprise" on TV One.

Current host Farai Chideya would not comment on her salary, but she told Richard Prince's Journal-isms "the information was news to me" and that it comes at a time when "News & Notes" "has not been able to access the resources available to us. I don't believe it's appropriate for us to discuss my compensation in strict terms, but I'm glad that Ed Gordon was compensated well, if in fact, he was compensated well. We as black hosts at NPR are aware that we have to fight for every penny we get."

Farai has got to be saying "My agent better get me more money on my next contract!"

Norman Whitfield, Legendary Songwriter/ Producer, Dead At 65

Norman Whitfield, one of the most successful and influential songwriter/producers to emanate from the formidable stable of Motown Records, died Tuesday at the age of 65. Whitfield co-wrote and/ or produced many hits for the label, including "Heard It Through the Grapevine," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion," "Just My Imagination," "War," the Grammy-winning "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and many others. Whitfield had struggled for months with complications from diabetes and had recently emerged from a coma.

A 'Behind the Music' moment: the "Car Wash" soundtrack

Norman Whitfield had been commissioned to record the soundtrack album for Car Wash by director Michael Schultz. Although Whitfield did not want to take on the project, he did so because of both the money involved and the chance to give Rose Royce, the disco/funk band who left Motown with Whitfield in 1975, the exposure they needed to break into the mainstream. Unable to come up with a theme song for the film, inspiration finally struck Whitfield while playing a game of basketball, and he wrote his first draft of "Car Wash" on a bag of fried chicken he'd bought. Car Wash's soundtrack, a double album, was Rose Royce's debut LP, and the title track was their debut single. "Car Wash" sold two million copies, and was a number one hit on both the Billboard pop and R&B charts. The Car Wash soundtrack album, entirely recorded by Rose Royce and Whitfield, spawned two more hit singles: "I Wanna Get Next to You" and "I'm Going Down" (later covered in 1994 by Mary J. Blige).

'Race war' in America

Former WDAS radio news host and reporter article on Race in America

Famitah Ali, now a Philadelphia Daily News columnist writes: AT LEAST 2 million readers visit DrudgeReport.com daily, and, for the last two weeks, it seemed like most of them were steamed at me.
Thousands of hostile messages flooded my e-mail after my Sept. 2 column that the Daily News called "We Need Obama, Not 4 More Years of George Bush."
Drudge cleverly headlined it:
"Philadelphia columnist warns if McCain wins, look for a full-fledged race war."
I stand by the column - but after all of that backlash, I realize I was dead wrong. We don't have to wait until after the election for a race war. We're in one now.

Forum sells 'Obama Waffles' with racial stereotype

A vendor at a conservative political forum was selling boxes of the "Obama Waffles" waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap. The product was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix and sold it for $10 a box at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

All-white jury seated in OJ Simpson kidnapping case

An all-white jury of 12 in Las Vegas was chosen to decide the fate of OJ Simpson who faces trial on kidnapping and armed robbery charges that could see the former football star jailed for life.
Simpson, 61, faces 12 charges stemming from a confrontation in a hotel room in September last year after which he and a gang of gun-toting cohorts left with pillow cases stuffed full of sports memorabilia.
In the state of Nevada, kidnapping and armed robbery both carry potential life sentences.
Simpson's latest ordeal comes 13 years after he was acquitted of killing his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Let's just say OJ, with Johnny Cochrane not around any longer, you're on your way to jail this time.

The Republicans are better at lying

They understand that the only effective way to govern Americans is to lie to them, not because we’re too stupid to grasp the big issues, but because we’re too busy to care.

The Democratic Convention’s biggest disappointment was Barack Obama’s complete failure to convince anyone that he’s a regular joe, possibly the simplest lie in politics.

John McCain, on the other hand, is a confident liar doing especially impressive work on taxes and Iraq.

Johnson and Robinson - Too Close to Call

The microphone has been passed, “in a race too close to call” Reach Media’s nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner today named Jeff Johnson and Stephanie Robinson as the new tag-team Commentators.

“I am honored to be part of the TJMS family. This is truly a bridge building opportunity as Stephanie and I bring a gender balance to commentary,” Jeff Johnson said. “This is also a great moment in time to bring those younger listeners, who make me what I am, into the family as well,” he stated. “I am delighted to join the TJMS team, and to share the microphone with Jeff Johnson,” Stephanie Robinson said. “Together, we will provide commentaries of the quality and kind that I hope will inspire, educate, and empower.”

TJMS “a party with a purpose” began the two month on-air search featuring up and coming leaders in the African American academic, news and entertainment community after the ever popular contributor, Tavis Smiley announced early this year his plans to leave the program after 12 years. Over 8 million listeners in 115 markets judged the winners in various categories including style, delivery and the ability to inform and engage listeners. Johnson will provide his commentary on Tuesday and Robinson on Thursday at 8:10am ET, starting on Tuesday, September 16.

Jeff Johnson a Washington, D.C.-based award-winning journalist, social activist and political commentator merging politics and pop culture. He is the managing editor/host of BET

Network’s The Truth with Jeff Johnson, a hard-hitting talk show delivering a varied and vibrant view of the news and issues, airing Friday’s, 11:00p.m. ET/PT. He has served as senior advisor for media and youth outreach for People for the American Way, national youth director for the NAACP and vice president for the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network.

Stephanie Robinson, Esq. is the Founding President and CEO of The Jamestown Project, a national think tank that focuses on democracy.

She is a Lecturer on Law at the Harvard Law School and former Chief Counsel for Senator Edward M. Kennedy and a recognized expert on social policy, women, race and family.

Reginald Hudlin leaving BET

Reginald Hudlin, the Hollywood director who three years ago became president for entertainment of Black Entertainment Television, "is leaving the company and returning to his entrepreneurial roots as an independent producer," CEO Debra Lee told BET employees on Thursday.

While Hudlin's franchise was entertainment, "under his guidance, we significantly ramped up our BET News division, and as a result, we've received 13 awards for our news series and specials in just over two years, including four from the National Association of Black Journalists," Lee wrote in a letter to employees.

However, under Hudlin's tenure there were also programming choices made by the network that were controversial. The show "Hot Ghetto Mess," showing black people at their tackiest, became the focus of protests. The outcry forced a name change for the show before it aired its first episode. It was soon canceled.

Debra Lee also wrote to employees, "From the moment he joined the BET family, Reggie infused our program development with incredible creativity, energy and passion. Under his leadership, the entertainment division produced 17 of the top 20 highest-rated shows in the network's 28-year history, including 'Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown,' 'American Gangster,' 'Baldwin Hills,' 'Sunday Best,' our first scripted series 'Somebodies,' and our highest-rated series ever, 'Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is.'"

Programs that no doubt will go down as making a positive contribution to the African American community.

TJMS reportedly chooses Roland Martin as the new "Tavis"

Tom Joyner chooses Chicago talk personality Roland Martin as his new commentator according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Feder says that the highly touted position will be going to Martin. Roland will wind up his morning talk show in Chicago at 1690 WVON at the end of September, and will then start his gig at the TJMS. He’s also a contributor to CNN, a commentator for Radio One’s TV One cable network, and a contributor to Essence magazine.

Update: It looks like there will be three commentators replacing Tavis. In addition to Roland Martin, Jeff Johnson and Stephanie Robinson were named as news and social, and political commentators for "The Tom Joyner Morning Show" after public voting ended in a dead heat. No offical word from the TJMS regarding Roland Martin and the story from the Chicago Sun-Times. Hmmmm.......

His show will run from 3-5pm (CT) and will focus on relationship issues. However, overall the station is a great source of political news during this presidential election season.
