MTV News Reports: DJ AM's Final Days Come Into Focus

From MTV News -It's possible we'll never know what happened in the final hours of DJ AM's life. But based on his busy schedule and upbeat tweets in the days before his body was found Friday in his New York apartment, it seems like the celebrity DJ Adam Goldstein was in a typically ebullient mood during his last week.

At his final DJ gig at Dusk in Atlantic City on Tuesday night, AM, 36, who was sober for more than 11 years after struggling with drugs in his 20s, asked the crowd, "Are you guys f---ed up tonight? I'm not," according to TMZ.

After that gig, it's unclear when AM was seen or heard from again. He reportedly sent a text message at 1 a.m. on the day he died about his weekly gig at Rain nightclub in Las Vegas that night. A friend called 911 when AM failed to answer his phone or leave for his scheduled flight to Vegas.

Police then went to AM's Soho apartment, and when they got no response, they broke down the door and found him face down on his bed, shirtless, with just sweatpants on and drug paraphernalia and prescription pill bottles nearby. The New York City coroner's office has not yet determined a cause of death, pending the completion of toxicology tests. TMZ reported Monday (August 31) that a law-enforcement source speculated that Goldstein likely died from an accidental overdose of drugs including prescription anti-anxiety medication, which he reportedly took to deal with his fear of flying in light of the fiery plane crash he survived one year ago in South Carolina.

According to a list of shows on his Web site, AM had engagements set up through the end of October, including his weekly Banana Split Sundaes show at the Bardot in Hollywood with fellow DJ Steve Aoki, one of which he was supposed to play Sunday. In a message on the party's MySpace page, organizers wrote, "We will forever miss DJ AM. Our love, support and deepest apologies go out to all friends, family and fans."

He was also slated to play a show Tuesday night in Las Vegas with DJ Jazzy Jeff at a party for Famous Stars and Straps, the clothing company headed up by his pal and TRV$DJAM partner Travis Barker. AM also had a standing weekly set at Rain at the Palms Casino in Vegas on Friday nights. That club observed a moment of silence Friday night and dimmed parts of its marquee to honor AM.

Followers of AM's Twitter account likely didn't see any reason to worry about the DJ over the past week. His mood seemed cheerful for the most part, tweeting August 21 that he played a bit of catch at Roxbury Park in Beverly Hills to prepare for throwing out the first pitch at a Mets game a few days later. That same night, he attended his first Marilyn Manson show at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas and gave the goth rocker props for playing some Linkin Park to warm up the crowd.
He was in Philadelphia on August 22, joking about the ornate sculpture above the bathtub in his Atlantic City hotel room and urging fans to come out that night for his set at the Dusk nightclub. "It's Saturday night," he tweeted, "live a little!"

On Sunday morning, around 8:18 a.m., he posted an update about leaving for Citi Stadium to throw out the first pitch at a Mets game. "Ho-lee shiz I'm nervous," he said. "How the F does a DJ get this honor? Thanks you GOD!" Wearing his DJ AM jersey, he excitedly tweeted a few hours later, "I made it to the plate! DEF not the best pitch, but I didn't bababooey it, so I know it wasn't the worst! Still was an honor."

After that, the tweets get less frequent, with a relieved one on Tuesday about waking up early and thinking he had a 9:45 a.m. appointment that was a actually a 10:45, and a post later that day about wrapping up filming his MTV special, "Gone Too Far," in Connecticut, in which he helped other struggling addicts. "Back to Dusk in AC [Atlantic City] tonight with Jesse Marco."

And then, just two hours later, the ominous, and final, tweet that has become a haunting epitaph. "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems," posted at 2:57 a.m. on Tuesday, quoting famed hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash's 1983 single, "New York, New York." Black Radio Has Great Value Especially the Urban AC Format

There’s “relatively little duplication” between urban and urban AC formats, says The Media Audit – and both formats generate strong listener loyalty.

The August “FYI” update from researcher Media Audit says “urban formats offer value beyond ratings data.” Its specialty is qualitative, and here are some snippets – Urban AC listeners “earn an average household income of $61,255, while the median age is 40 and 59% are female.” Not only that, “more than half consider themselves to be ‘financial optimists.’” 14% of them plan to make a domestic vehicle purchase in the next 12 months, “a figure that is double the rate for the typical adult.”

Encouraging news for urban radio programmers, who didn't know that Black people LOVE their radio?; however such a report suggest that the traditional urban AC playlist will be maintained. I'm honestly thinking how long will daily doses of Keith Sweat, Anita Baker, and Atlantic Starr continue to dominate what is thought of as Urban Adult Comtemporary music. Thanks Maxwell for injecting some much needed life into the Urban AC format. Source TRI and Media Audit

Michael Jackson Birthday Bash, "Brooklyn Style", hosted by Spike Lee

The King of Pop would have turned 51 today. To celebrate his life, Spike Lee invites everyone to a Brooklyn style block party.

From the Root.com You could say that Spike Lee always had a special connection to Michael Jackson: They were born a year apart, both to musical families. Back in the day, every Saturday morning, Lee, like many other black kids across the country, sat down in front of the TV, glued to the “Jackson 5” cartoons.

“We’re of the same era,” Lee told The Root. “I wanted my Afro to be perfectly round like Michael’s, all that stuff.”

Years later, the two ended up working together, collaborating on a music video for “They Don’t Care About Us” in Brazil. The two never worked together again, but Lee found himself hit hard by Jackson’s death. So he decided to throw Michael a birthday party.

Not just any birthday party: A “Brooklyn style block party,” Lee says. “It’s going to just be how we do it, Brooklyn style, I’ll leave it at that. It’s going to be a joyous, festive, celebratory party.” Free.

Anybody and everybody is invited to attend Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday party on Saturday, August 29, from noon to 5 p.m., at Prospect Park, (map) Brooklyn, New York. DJ Spinna will be spinning all things Jackson, from the Jackson 5 to the Jacksons to Michael Jackson. The Brooklyn borough president will be on hand to declare Aug. 29 “Michael Jackson Day.”

“At the end, we’ll all sing Happy Birthday to Michael,” Lee says. “We’re going to make sure he hears us, too. All over the world, people are going to be celebrating his birthday. But he’s going to hear Brooklyn; Brooklyn is going to be in the house. Deep.”

The block party event, through Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, promises twitter updates throughout the day.

Osei The Dark Secret - Another You Pick the Host Contest

Osei, The Dark Secret has been the fill in host on the afternoon show on 107.5 WBLS in New York this week. The slot previously held down by the "Queen of Media" Wendy Williams. The Urban AC station has apparently been running a "you pick the new afternoon drive host" contest. Did you know? It kind of mysteriously appeared on the station's website this week. The contest is now between last week's host Salt N' Pepa, Jeff Foxx and Osei.

Osei was a part of the CBS Radio line-up. The former night host on WPGC was flying down to Atlanta to host weekends at V-103. Prior to that Osei was the midday host at the station until management decided to bring back Porsche Foxx. Thumbs up to his uptempo midday presentation at V-103.

But now all of sudden there's seems to be a proliferation of "you pick the host" contest. Well that's not quite the case, (there are two others) but WPGC is winding down their contest this week and Power 99 in Philly is... well seems to be having a contest that is haphazard at best. The contest has been going on for almost month and they've yet to announce a winner. Oh well... the voting goes on.

Star and Buc Wild - 90 Seconds Everyday

Star says, "I believe content is king. So beginning with my daily comments, I plan to talk about the things people really find interesting. I look forward to working with the Superadio Networks team who support my vision."

Veteran and controversial air personality Troi "Star" Torain will host a new daily commentary entitled "The Star Chamber." The 90-second feature will be syndicated and distributed under a deal with Superadio Networks. Star and co-host Buc Wild were previously syndicated to about ten markets by Clear Channel's Premiere Radio until July, 2006 to stations like Power 105.1 in NY and Power 99 in Philly.

"We are thrilled to be in partnership with Star and 'The Star Chamber,'" said Superadio VP/Affiliate Relations Eric Faison. "We believe that the time is right for a short-form segment that is quick, compelling, and speaks to a contemporary audience about the topics and personalities of the day in Star's unique voice."

Look for audio segments that are similar to Star's popular Vlad TV video snippets. Could this be a part of the vision to return to morning radio?

CBS Radio Tweaks WPGC 95.5

This week while WPGC is auditioning co-hosts for the morning show with Donnie Simpson, the station has tweaked their imaging.

DCRTV observes from their e-mailbag "Some changes at WPGC. Their on-air name is now '95-5 PGC' and their slogan is 'DC's Hip Hop And R&B.' The music sounds about the same, except I noticed that they didn't play as many slower songs as they did before in the day. They also took the cursive 'Jamz' off of their logo and replaced it with '955 FM' as seen on their website.

There was speculation that CBS Radio was going to change the musical direction of the Washington, D.C. station due to a drop in overall ratings out of the top 10. Many believe because of the PPM electronic rating system.

The change would have looked more like 92.3 Now in New York and AMP Radio in Los Angeles. The "Hit Music" stations play everything from Drake to Britney Spears. Both stations were classic rock stations earlier this year. The tweaking of WPGC seems to be a vote of confidence for the urban music programming at the station for now.

Conservative Radio Host Glenn Beck Attacks Obama adviser Van Jones

from the L.A. Times Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by
Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

Meanwhile... from the Associated Press Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel on Monday after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org. That's more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

While it's unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

Wendy Williams on BET's 106 and Park to Promote TV Show and More...

Wendy Williams chats it up with Terence and Rocsi on the couch at 106 & Park. Wendy talks about her Radio Hall of Fame Award, her first radio job making peanuts in the Virgin Islands and the origin of her signature phrase "How You Doin'?" came from. She also reveals that her former co-host Charlamagne Tha God of 100.3 The Beat (WPHI) will be her presenter at the Radio Hall of Fame Awards later this year. By the way, whatever happen to Artie? Who? Exactly.

Dr. Boyce Watkins will join Al Sharpton and Keep it Real

Dr. Boyce Watkins of Syracuse University and founder of the Your Black World website is now slated for a weekly segment on "Keeping it Real with Al Sharpton." The show is currently syndicated in 18 cities across the nation. Every Monday from 1:15 - 2:15 pm EST, Dr. Watkins and Rev. Sharpton will discuss political issues of the day and matters affecting our nation. To find out more about the show visit www.SharptonTalk.net or www.BoyceWatkins.com.

Perhaps Dr. Boyce can persuade President Obama to appear on an African American talk show to talk about Health Care Reform. If not Rev. Al's show maybe Joe Madison, Mark Thompson, Bev Smith, Warren Ballentine or even Roland Martin.

Maybe if a White guy brings a semi-automatic assault rifle to the next Health Care Reform town meeting then it just might happen.

<---See the Black guy who brought the AR-15 to the Arizona town meeting attended by President Obama; well it turns out it was just a radio publicity stunt! Ha ha, very funny.

Cathy Hughes and John Conyers - An Unlikely Happy Pair

Radio One, Inc. Founder & Chairperson Cathy Hughes received the Black fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi's Humanitarian Award earlier this month and poses for a picture with Rep. John Conyers of Michigan. You would think they would be uncomfortable in each other's presence. Doesn't seem to be the case here... In fact they seem to be having a good time among the Nupes at the Washington, D.C. affair.
...Wait a second that's the same John Conyers (and Kappa man by the way) that you told your listeners to call, e-mail and write to, because he is putting BLACK RADIO OUT OF BUSINESS because of the Performance Royalty Tax he's supporting! Cathy this is war!!! Why are socializing and kibitzing with the enemy? This is strange, strange indeed...
Every Radio One station has this story on their website...and this is the photo they have chosen to use.

Unity Day Event Rescheduled for 2010 According to Local Group

Today was to be "THE DAY", The group issued this statement: “Unity Day On The Parkway” for August 23, 2009 must reschedule the Unity Day Event for 2010, due to Clear Channel and the City of Philadelphia creating interference and delay. Preparation for Unity Day 2010 is moving forward without delay.

The above statement seems unprofessional or sour grapes if you will in light of the resources and effort needed to pull off an event the magnitude of Unity Day. An event that was so much a part of the fabric of the African American community in Philadelphia each summer. The blame placed squarely on the shoulders of Clear Channel radio and the City of Philadelphia seems to be uncalled for.

The Unity Day concept began under the leadership of then WDAS General Manager Cody Anderson. After several ownership changes during the past 30 years, Clear Channel now owns the station. They're in charge of the direction of the station. CC changed the format on 1480 WDAS AM to a Spanish music station a couple of years ago. They decided to take Unity Day off the parkway in 2008 and make it a concert and not a community gathering. CC doesn't just own the studios, equipment and pay the employees; they own "the legacy" of the station. Despite CC's objections, the City of Philadelphia did issue a permit to the group. Ultimately whose fault was it if they were unable to pull it off?

The cost of such an event must be enormous! Just think of how much it would have cost them to have the police department maintain a level of security during the event and for city workers to clean up after the event. Were they just expecting donations to come flooding in to pay for the utilities for the event? In order to pull off such an event you need sponsors, let's re-phrase that, you need major corporate sponsors.

Without major sponsors; local TV, radio, or newspaper advertising; media awareness; endorsements from elected officials or other community organizations; no known musical guests or celebrities; maybe the Unity Day on the Parkway 2009 group should have organized a smaller event like a picnic in the park. It's what WDAS did with the "Unity Picnic" some 30 years ago.

Maybe starting off small would have been best.

Whitney Houston Comeback Interview with Oprah

Will Wendy Williams get an interview also?

Oprah Winfrey will launch the 24th season of her daytime talk show on September 14th with what Oprah's people are calling "the most anticipated music interview of the decade" with an exclusive with Whitney Houston. This will be Houston's first interview in 7 years. Houston's new CD, "I Look To You," hits stores Aug. 31 and is being billed as her big comeback.

If you have been watching the Wendy Williams TV Show, you know Wendy has been openly campaigning for Whitney to appear on her show. That of course won't be the case, but maybe Wendy might be next? Wouldn't it be great for those two to sit down and have a chat?

On Wendy's blog it states: "Wendy’s dream guest is Whitney Houston, but she knows patience is a virtue. So after Diane Sawyer and after Oprah, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Whitney will stop by the show.

Here's more of her video plea>>

We're sure the next Whitney-Wendy interview won't be anything like the radio appearance from 2003 on WBLS...

"The Beat" is Done in L.A. - Now it's only known as "K-DAY"

93.5 Drops the Beat and focuses on 93.5 KDAY FM

The Beat and KDAY have a long history in Los Angeles radio.

The original KDAY 1580 AM was an old R&B and Soul music station that began playing rap in the early 80's and helped bring into prominence the West Coast rap scene featuring N.W.A. The station was sold in 1991. KDAY was revived and returned to the L.A. airwaves on FM radio in 2004, with the slogan "Hip-Hop Today and Back in the Day."

92.3 "The Beat" (KKBT) many say was inspired by KDAY and launched an urban format in 1991 after several unsuccessful attempts at other fomats. "The Beat" reached legendary status by becoming the number one station in Los Angeles with a multi-ethnic staff playing hip-hop/rhythmic music and leading the way to confront the gang violence in L.A. The station's slogan was "No Color Lines," proudly championing the diversity of the region. After a frequency switch to 100.3 in 2001, new owners Radio One tinkered with the format for a few years with many hosts coming and going eventually dumping the name "The Beat" in favor of Urban AC "V 100" in 2007 and then sold the station in 2008.

Last year 93.5 FM rebranded themselves as an Urban AC station with an all syndicated line-up and by adding "The Beat" to the station's identity. The New 93.5 "The Beat KDAY" was an attempt to bring together the history of both stations, but now they have once again gone in another direction.

This time they're bringing back the old school hip hop format complete with the silver and black colors of N.W.A., the NHL's Kings and the NFL's Los Angeles (now Oakland) Raiders:

Here's their news release: - The landscape of Los Angeles radio has been ever changing over the last several years and the programming at 93.5 is taking an exciting turn for the better. “The Beat” will be dropped as focus is placed on the brand equity in KDAY and its deep musical roots.

"Los Angeles has been missing the west coast sound. By eliminating syndicated programming, KDAY can now focus on its strengths as a local, independent station that connects with the diverse culture that is Los Angeles. With a mix of the old school and the new music that is enjoyed today, I feel we have a unique and winning recipe." - Adrian Scott Program Director/OM.

93.5 KDAY was unveiled at the Nokia Theatre last weekend, with some of Hip-hop's most iconic figures including: Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, and Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick, Dj Quik, and Whodini. The sold out show attracted a diverse LA crowd of many races, and ages both young and old.

Salt n' Pepa on the Air at 107.5 WBLS New York - Are they Wendy Williams' replacement?

Apparently 107.5 WBLS is not quite satisfied with Jeff Foxx hosting afternoons after the departure of Wendy Williams at the end of July.

Rappers Salt N' Pepa will sit in all THIS week on WBLS. Not sure what the fascination radio execs have with using artists whose music careers have seen better days as radio personalities.

Is being a radio host not a profession? Do they think all you have to do is be famous in the entertainment industry and people will just automatically turn on their radio and listen? And exactly what is Salt N' Pepa's connection to WBLS' "Today's R&B and Classic Soul" format? They are rappers.

We wonder which rapper or comic is next? Whoever it is, just know, NO radio experience is required!

WCHB's Mildred Gaddis calls police on Hot 102.7's Reggie Reg

Radio One's WCHB-AM/Detroit morning host Mildred Gaddis called for police while on the air at around 7:30am Friday morning saying an intruder had broken into the station. She was then heard yelling "how did he get in here" following by music, and then an old show. As it turns out the incident appears to stem from bad blood between Gaddis and DJ "Reggie Reg" Davis.

Reg had worked for co-owned WHTD-FM (Hot 102.7) until Friday as he had come to the station to submit his resignation. Reggie Reg says that he resigned his job because Gaddis and some of her listeners disapproved of him remaining on the air while he was running for a spot on Detroit's Charter Commission, reports WXYZ-TV.

Reggie Reg told WXYZ that "at the time I was an employee just like her. I had a key. I came in today to drop off my resignation letter. Her producer tried to block me in the common area. She got on the phone to police. I wish her no harm."

In a statement, Radio One said, "Davis' actions today came as a complete surprise. We learned of his resignation in the news this morning and had no advance warning that he would show up at our studios while Mildred Gaddis was on the air. Ms. Gaddis played no role whatsoever in the Company's decision on Mr. Davis' candidacy, and we fully support her decision to ask for assistance from the police." -from Radio Online

See a video news report with Reggie Reg's take on the incident from Channel 7 Action News WXYZ-TV Detroit and the Channel 2 WJBK MyFoxDetroit's report.

Michael Vick Signs Two Year Deal with the Philadelphia Eagles with Mixed Reactions

The signing of Michael Vick to a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles has had plenty of mixed reactions and controversy within and outside the NFL community along with the local fans of the team. What's interesting to note is the timing of the signing.

The signing of Michael Vick on Friday comes two days before his first sit down interview on 60 minutes with CBS' NFL Today studio host James Brown. Not to say that I am a self-subscribed conspiracy theorist (and this hardly qualifies as such), but I find it more than a coincidence that the interview is scheduled right after Vick's signing with the Eagles. After pursuing a Michael Vick interview for several months, James Brown was granted an interview with Vick last Monday, August 10. Not Oprah, FOX, ESPN, or NBC; but CBS.

In this scenario, one hand feeds another and the Michael Vick story stays in the news cycle for the next few days. Coach Andy Reid, owner Jeffrey Lurie, and "The Michael Vick Team" have been contemplating and discussing the Eagles' signing of Michael Vick for quite awhile with behind the scenes interviews. Their decision to sign Vick just didn't happened this week... and the television interview with Michael Vick on Sunday just seems to have perfect timing. Now I ask, "Would there be as much interest to watch the interview on Michael Vick, if he was sitting on the sidelines, in limbo, without the prospect of playing for another NFL team?"

The signing has generated high interest for CBS television and Sunday's 60 Minutes program now that Michael Vick will be back in the NFL. Otherwise wouldn't we just expect a rerun program late in the summer on 60 Minutes? This move is good for CBS and the NFL. Also note the Philadelphia Eagles radio contract is with a CBS radio sports station.

"No Urban Dictates" Lives On - Mini Cooper Ad Agency Gets Caught in an Email - We Don't Want to Advertise to Black Consumers

"Non Urban Dictate" (NUD) is a "supposedly" illegal practice that essentially means that a company is not interested in the Black consumer. Instructions are usually implied orally or left unsaid, no one sends this kind of stuff in an email anymore.

A NUD label means that a company does not want their marketing and advertising materials placed in media that claim an "urban" audience (or in other words to African American consumers) as their main target.

In the advertising world, companies feel that there are legitimate reasons for them not to use urban radio. For example, African Americans may not index high in certain categories or that a company's strategy is to market to the Black consumer down the road after they have established a strong position in their primary target.

Now comes a five-word line in an email from a Los Angeles agency buyer seeking proposals for a Mini Cooper radio commercial is seen as the latest evidence that the decades-old “No Urban Dictates” lives on.

Here's part of the email:

MARKETS-BOSTON-HOUSTON-DC-BALTIMORE

Formats-Rock, News, Alternative, Sports, Talk

Length: 30’s

Dayparts-All

No combos or urban formats.

The buyer tells stations, “No combos or urban formats.” Public advocates say it shows why an FCC compliance officer is needed. In a letter to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, the Minority Media Telecommunications Council executive director David Honig writes, “If the Broadcast Nondiscrimination Rule remains unenforced, NUDs will continue to compromise minority broadcasters’ ability to serve their communities."

So what are the long term effects of this? Advertising agencies will avoid placing their ads on urban stations like V-103 in Atlanta or WHUR in Washington, despite the fact that these stations are many times number one in overall ratings in their cities. MMTC calculates dictates cost minority stations more than $200 million a year.

Tyler Perry and Madea's Popularity Comes Under Attack by Media Blogger

Courtney Young writes about media images of Black women in popular culture. She asks Perry, "How can black women achieve equity in media ownership, images and leadership if they're always portrayed as stereotypes? Mr. Perry, you owe your audience something better."

"Tyler keeps saying that Madea is based on black women he's known, and maybe so.... But Madea does have connections to the old mammy type. She's mammy-like. If a white director put out this product, the black audience would be appalled," says pre-eminent film scholar Donald Bogle. Black female relationships within Perry's films are often interrupted by the Madea character, who shows up in order to "teach" these women the proper way to femininity that will ultimately lead to Prince Charming and a happy ending.

Each of his films advances nearly the same message to his audience (which is overwhelmingly African-American, female, devoutly Christian and over 30). Be demure. Be strong but not too strong. Too much ambition is a detriment to your ability to find a partner and spiritual health. Female beauty can be dangerous. Let a man be a "man." True female fulfillment is found in the role of wife and/or mother.

-Tyler Perry has rapidly become the most bankable African-American moviemaking brand in Hollywood and an entrepreneurial heavyweight. The seven feature films he has conceived and produced have earned more than $300 million at the box office, with an average opening-weekend gross of $25 million--no small feat for films with predominately black casts. He credits his creative inspiration for these films, in part, to African-American women. So far, so good--that is, until you see the films.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry may see himself as creating modern-day fairy tales for black women, but he's actually reinforcing some seriously conservative gender politics. Perry's films typically follow the same timeworn narrative: a woman experiences abandonment and/or abuse at the hands of a "bad" man; she takes umbrage, lashing out at those closest to her, most notably a "good" man in her life; she experiences a revelatory moment of change; and she ends the film settled down with the good man who promises her a better life. James Brown gets first interview with Michael Vick

CBS Sports and NFL Pre-game host James Brown sat down with Michael Vick for the quarterback's first on-camera interview since he was released from federal prison in mid-July for charges related to his former dogfighting ring this Sunday on 60 Minutes. Brown offered some of his observations with NFL Network's NFL Total Access on Wednesday evening.

Of Vick's involvement with dogfighting, Brown observed that Vick "was introduced to it at a very young age, so he didn't see much wrong with it." Brown even said that there was "tacit approval" of dogfighting in Vick's childhood neighborhood, and that police did nothing to discourage it.

Of Vick's mindset today, Brown said: "Michael Vick was very resolute. He was very committed and passionate about his efforts to continue educating youngsters, particularly youngsters and young folks in urban areas, because that's the audience -- the target population -- that he thinks he can be most effective with."

Brown also said he "repeatedly" asked Vick about his remorse over his involvement with dogfighting. "He answered the question very sincerely," Brown says. "He was very steadfast in answering the question -- he didn't shy away from it. He knew that it was gonna be a tough interview. ... He understood why those questions had to be asked."

Brown says he also focused on what Vick learned in prison, the people he's now surrounding himself with and how his decision-making has changed, among other topics.

Brown also interviewed former NFL coach and now Vick's mentor Tony Dungy for the piece and Humane Society of the United States CEO Wayne Pacelle. -Source USA Today

Michael Baisden Dumped by 93.5 The Beat KDAY

...and only one syndicated show remains at 93.5 The Beat Los Angeles. I bet you can't guess. Meanwhile the station has completely changed it's music from an Urban/AC to a decidely Urban/Hip-Hop flow.

Last year the Magic Broadcasting, Inc. station boasted a "superstar" radio line-up with all syndicated programming. The hosts were Steve Harvey, Wendy Williams, Mo'Nique, Michael Baisden, local host and radio vet/ program director Theo (who's "Theo After Dark" was syndicated to other stations), Michael Baisden, and the Keith Sweat Hotel each and everyday.

Sounds crazy to have no local host doesn't it?

A couple of months ago KDAY dropped the Steve Harvey Morning Show and just this week it was picked back up in the Los Angeles area by 102.3 KJLH.

Well now they're left with only one syndicated show. Your guess: That's right Keith Sweat! Who's on overnights at the station. Only until his contract with the station runs out...
Now would KJLH owner Stevie Wonder possibly bring Michael Baisden to his station... Hmmm

Star and Buc Wild's former station Pulse 87 barely has a pulse or beat...

How things can change in the radio biz. The following sounds great...

Last spring Mega Media announced some pretty ambitious plans (not mentioned in the video) of duplicating their Channel 6/low-power TV audio/87.7 FM dance radio station concept to Washington, D.C. and Chicago. But those plans were scrapped by the summer. Now... The financially-troubled Mega Media Group the owners of rhythmic dance station Pulse 87 (WNYZ-LP) in New York, has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to court papers, Mega owes creditors more than $3.5 million. But that's not all, the frequency owner Island Broadcasting, has reportedly put the signal up for sale with a price tag of $15 million.

The station asked for listener's assistance in raising cash a couple of weeks ago, but raised only $70,000 in new funding, far short of the debt owed. In the court filing, the five-year-old company listed total assets of $180,000 and total liabilities of $3.56 million.

Island Broadcasting has lost confidence in Mega Media ability to pay off debt. Island CEO Dick Bogner has give Mega until the end of August before creditors close down the station, despite its ten-year lease on the facility.

It was back in February of '08 that the station launched with much fanfare as the home of the Star and Buc Wild morning show to generate some publicity to get the new station off the ground.
But by October of '08 they had left the station as Star and Buc Wild, the haters in the arena of Hip Hop music, didn't really fit the dance music format of Pulse 87.

Laiya Uses Facebook to Join the Power 99 Morning Show Contest

A case of the power of Social Networking

Laiya St. Clair started the facebook group "Operation GET LAIYA BACK ON THE RADIO!" to host the Monday morning show on Power 99 (WUSL). Laiya most recently was the midday host on 100.3 The Beat (WPHI) and prior to that co-hosted the morning show with Poochman and Monie Love.

Well how did she get that shot to host? She asked her facebook group members to call Power 99, because she was not a part of the original contestants for the morning show. Laiya writes in a note to her fans, "...I really want to thank yall for calling Power 99. I will be on Monday morning!!!!!! I KNOW!!!!! Power in numbers yall...literally!"

Laiya will host Monday morning on Power 99 from 6-10a.m.

Also added to the contest this week will be The Big Lip Bandit, a top-rated morning host at WEDR 99 Jamz (Miami) on Tuesday (He was replaced by the Rickey Smiley syndicated show last year). Monie Love will host on Wednesday. She sat in with the Hot Boyz' morning show audition last week and host weekends at the station.

Jay-Z on the grind to market his new album Blueprint 3

Jay-Z and Oprah Winfrey in and around the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn on Saturday. So Oprah will have Jay-Z on her show. Oprah, facebook(?), twitter(?), and now Hip Hop?!? Wait that's Kevin Liles in the background. His last appearance on Oprah wasn't so good?

Here's Kanye West, Rihanna and Jay-Z on the set of the video shoot for the album's main lead single "Run This Town."

Also, it was announced last week that those three are set to debut on the premiere of "The Jay Leno Show" show on NBC at 10p.m. on September 14th.

The album is set to release on September 9, but that may change. Wow haven't since this kind of marketing push in a long time... oh, wait... take that back, well since Jamie Foxx.

Steve Harvey and other changes shake up the lineup at 102.3 KJLH Los Angeles

The Steve Harvey Morning Show with Shirley Strawberry, Carla Farrell and Nephew Tommy leads the changes at KJLH from 6-10 a.m. PT, today following the news, information and community program "The Front Page" with Dominique DiPrima from 4:30 a.m. - 6:00 a.m.

Nautica de la Cruz (former morning co-host) takes over middays from 10:00am - 1:00pm, veteran Lon McQ takes over early afternoons from 1:00pm - 4:00pm, Tammi Mac and Don Amiche hold down afternoon drive time 4:00pm - 8:00pm and former midday host Kevin Nash is on in the evenings from 8:00pm - midnight.

One question remains: What will happen to owner Stevie Wonder's show Morning Thunder Thousand Dollar Thursday?

Hopefully Steve Harvey can help bring up the overall ratings for the station. The PPM electronic ratings system has really hurt KJLH and adding Nautica and Don Amiche to the line-up is an attempt to appeal to the large Hispanic population in L.A. We hear for quite awhile Stevie Wonder has been using his own money to keep the station afloat.
