An Old Fashioned Radio War is Heating Up in Sports Radio: It's CBS Radio vs. ESPN

This is better than a Mayweather and Pacquiao fight!

It's s-o-o-o-o-o-o 90's! When radio was fun and much more local than it is today and a ratings war between two competiting stations was the norm. Nowadays with corporate meddling, homogenized playlists and limited on-air banter, finding two DJ's going at each other is rare in music formatted radio stations. However that sort of battle still exists in talk radio. This war is between long time Philadelphia sports radio "king" Howard Eskin (who looks like the king from Burger King) and his former co-worker Mike Missanelli.

Eskin who has been a fixture atop the sports ratings at CBS owned 610 WIP for more than 25 years, has seen his kingdom begin to crumble with the local ESPN radio affiliate's addition of Missanelli and their move to simulcast their AM signal (950 WPEN) to the FM side of things (97.5 FM The Fanatic) late last year.

Radio One's Majic 102.3 WMMJ Set to Relaunch Station, Seeking New On Air Personalities

You can not only become a club member, you could become a member "on the air" at the station.

Last week Majic 102.3, Radio One's Washington, D.C. Urban AC station fired their entire on-air staff. The reason given was that according to the PPM electronic ratings devices, listeners seemed to tuned in longer when they didn't hear chatter from the DJ's. Well this week, the real reason is revealed. WMMJ is now advertising for three on air positions on Radio One's corporate website.

Usually new PD's try to get to know the market before making drastic changes at a station like firing everybody; however newly arrived program director Jamillah Muhummad is ready to put her imprint on the station. Muhummad joined the station a month ago after being PD at Clear Channel's Mix 92.3 WMXD in Detroit.

D.C. favorite Donnie Simpson would seemed to be a perfect fit to join the station; but it is believed that he would not be available to any D.C. area station until at least February 2011...

What's Next for Clear Channel? Will Sirius Satellite Radio's CEO Mel Karmazin Run the Company That is Deep In Debt

According to the Taylor Radio Industry Newsletter (TRI), there is speculation from an unidentified major market player, that Clear Channel Communications may try to woo Mel Karmazin (pictured center) away from Sirius XM Radio to replace Mark Mays as CEO. The main reason would be to bring Howard Stern back to terrestrial radio. The major-market player says “I think Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners have a good idea who they want to succeed Mark Mays.” Is there any validity to this speculation?

What might Howard Stern say about this? "Why the **** would I want to go back to regular radio and have to answer to a program director that's up my a** and the FCC that's on my a** every day?

Brandi Garcia Fired from 97.9 The Box for Playing a Waka Flocka Remix With One Verse from Trae Tha Truth

"You Can't Ban the Truth!"- says former 97.9 The Box personality Brandi Garcia.

There was a short mention earlier this week in the industry trades regarding Brandi Garcia leaving Houston's 97.9 The Box (KBXX). Usually it means fired, but sometimes DJ's move on to better opportunities outside of radio. With Brandi's popularity in the Houston area, however it would lead anyone to believe that she was fired. However fans rarely, if ever know why their favorite radio DJ's leave. Well in this case Brandi lets us know why she was fired in the following video.

Taking A Look at Drake, President Obama, and Drake's new album 'Thank Me Later'

Drake is reaching unprecedented acclaim for an artist that seems to have come out of nowhere, other than the hit "Best You Ever Had." His popularity and awareness has been generated exclusively through promotion, media, (social networking and otherwise), radio and not from the 'hood or da streetz. As we are often so reminded in the Hip Hop culture, as that is the only way to really keep it real.

Writer Thomas Chatterton Williams takes a looks at the Drake phenomenon, along with perceptions of President Barack Obama and what it says to the African American community.
