Gone will be the "Old School R&B Station" branding
Today Cox Media's Atlanta Urban AC station Kiss 104.1 (WALR) gets a makeover of sorts and updates its music by going commercial free on Memorial Day. Kiss is also emphasizing their web address in its sweepers.
According to
Rodney Ho of the AJC -"the station will add more songs from the past 20 years into its mix to try to draw more youthful listeners."
The station will continue to feature the Tom Joyner Morning Show and local personalities the rest of the day as it tries to compete with Radio One's Majic 107.5/97.5.
Take a listen to the new sound of Kiss 104.1.
Programmers of Urban AC radio across the country have a difficult task of tweaking this format. (That would be the programmers who actually have an input, rather than the ones that have dictates from corporate) They risk the prospect of turning off a whole bunch of listeners and pissing off advertisers to the point where neither will return to the station outside of the syndicated morning show. People love to listen to their favorites over and over again. That's been proven. However the question remains how long can Urban AC radio continue to play songs from the 70's and 80's and not sound stale? (The simple answer is: When listeners demand it and so in Atlanta the listeners have spoken.)
What do you think of the new sound of Kiss 104.1?
