WRXP, New York's former home of CD 101.9 set to make a Format Change to News and Female Talk

Facebook Fans Try to Save The New York Rock Experience 'RXP 101.9

WQCD "CD 101.9", was once the premiere Smooth Jazz station in the country. As they say all good things must come to an end- CD 101.9's 20 year run ended in 2008 when it became 'RXP 101.9. There are many New York area listeners who still missed the unique jazz programming of CD 101.9. One can argue that CD 101.9 had the most diverse audience of any 25-54 station in the 90's. But by the 2000's, radio consultants morphed CD 101.9 and many other Smooth Jazz stations' playlist to mimic Urban AC. Smooth Jazz began sounding like 'Today's R&B and Classic Soul', so it was time for a change.

In its place came the arrival of 'RXP 101.9, an alternate format that was missing from the New York City airwaves. However on June 21, 2011, Emmis Communications announced it was selling WRXP to the radio firm Merlin Media. They are expected to begin operating WRXP through a local marketing agreement on July 15, with a format change. Will New York’s newest radio format be female talk with news on FM?

Here's some of the fans of 'RXP on facebook attempting to save their radio station. As with any format change in radio, there will always be passionate fans that will miss it.

Take a listen to the soundcheck of CD 101.9 from 1990. Notice that "Smooth Jazz" was not a part of their imaging, it was simply "CD 101.9." A pretty cool radio station at the time.
