Will Hot 107.9 Philly Go Local for their New Morning Show?
Radio One's Philly Urban Hip Hop station WPHI (now known as Hot 107.9) has had trouble establishing a morning show in the Philadelphia market for quite some time. Before the station reincarnated itself as Hot 107.9, it was known as 100.3 The Beat. Morning show success has been a hard nut for them to crack.
A few days before the holiday season, the station quietly ended the syndicated run of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show due to low ratings. Now they will be looking to re-introduce yet another morning show to the market place. Sources suggest that current Hot 107.9 afternoon host Q Deezy will land the new morning show at some point in the future. Q Deezy is a former co-host with the syndicated Big Boy's Neighborhood and was a long time DJ at rival Power 99 (WUSL). He is by far the most popular host at the station. There is also speculation that Uncle O who was recently released as a co-host on the morning show on Clear Channel's Power 99 may join the station as well.
WPHI mornings in the past as "100.3 The Beat" has featured Charlamagne tha God now with Power 105.1 (WWPR New York); radio personality Tarsha Jones aka Jonesy; Troi Torain and crew of the Star and Buc Wild Morning Show; as well as the local morning team with the most longevity and popularity with hosts Derek "Poochman" Firth, Laiya St. Clair, and for a time former rapper Monie Love.
WPHI was also once known as "Philly 103.9" where Bobby Holiday now with 1480 WDAS AM and the syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show with Olivia Fox held down mornings.
Don't expect Hot 107.9 Philly and Radio One to announce a new morning show anytime soon. The station continues to run the midday afternoon show with host Maria More from the Atlanta studio's of Hot 107.9 WHTA.
