Grandson of Radio Legend Mary Mason Doesn't Plead Guilty; Ask for Jury Trial


The grandson of legendary WHAT 1340 AM Philadelphia Radio host Mary Mason decided against pleading guilty on Thursday to charges he stole from her estate of $843,000.

An attorney representing Calvin Steven Turner IV, the grandson and only surviving heir of Mason, asked for a continuance regarding charges over the misuse of funds in court. Mason, whose given name is Beatrice E. Turner was not present in court.

Steve Turner, son, caregiver, and only child of Mary Mason, was a former radio personality, record promoter, and music group manager- passed away in 2012 at age 62.

Mary Mason left the African American talk station WHAT for a time to work at top rated Philadelphia talk radio stations 1210 AM WCAU and WWDB 96.5 FM, which broaden her reach and popularity to a mainstream audience. She began her radio career as a gospel music host at WHAT, where she took over the name "Mary Mason" from the station's owner Dolly Banks in the late 1950's.

Mason now lives in a facility where Medicare pays most of her expenses. Montgomery County (PA) Court of Common Pleas declared her a totally incapacitated person due to her severe dementia.
