Ebro Named Apple Music’s Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B

Ebro Darden, a cultural authority and arbiter of taste in the hip hop and R&B community has been named Apple Music’s Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B. Over the last four years on Apple Music’s Beats 1 global livestream, Ebro has been instrumental in bringing authentic conversation around music, spotlighting some of the largest artists in music spanning genres from Meek Mill to Cardi B and Ariana Grande and from Janelle Monae to Jennifer Lopez and J Balvin; as well as many notables including SZA, H.E.R, Migos, Miguel, Leon Bridges, Lil Yachty, Khalid, Chance the Rapper and many many more.

As Apple Music’s new Global Head of Hip-Hop and R&B, Ebro will manage a team of Hip-Hop and R&B editors as they build out editorial plans for artists, albums and song releases. With his own team and cross functional teams Ebro will be plugged into the various music communities and seek out talent in the United States and around the world. He will also have a leadership role within the company to find ways to connect with urban music communities and beyond.

Ebro joined Apple Music in 2015 as an anchor host of Apple Music’s Beats 1 global livestream alongside Zane Lowe and Julie Adenuga. Ebro will continue showcasing the latest and greatest from the hip-hop world on Apple Music’s global livestream Beats 1. His show will remain in its current time slot on M-TH from 3-5PM EST. He will also continue to host Ebro In The Morning, his successful New York morning radio show on Hot97 (WQHT) which airs M-F from 6AM to 10AM.

Hip Hop and R&B releases consistently deliver record breaking streaming numbers on Apple Music, and 2018 saw unprecedented streaming milestones on Apple Music from the likes of Drake, Rihanna, J. Cole, Cardi B, Post Malone, Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott. The leading artists in hip hop and R&B utilize Apple Music’s Beats 1 as a platform to help launch their new albums with dedicated Beats 1 shows — most recently Nicki Minaj (Queen Radio), Vince Staples(Ramona Radio), Travis Scott (.Wav Radio), The Weeknd (MEMENTO MORI), Anderson .Paak (.Paak House Radio), etc.

Ebro begins his new role today.

The pact is not complete and there is always the risk it may not come to fruition, one of these people says. CNN declined to make executives available for comment.

Tavis Smiley owned Los Angeles talk station KBLA Talk 1580 donated $20,000 in scholarship money to the NABJLA and MPJI. Smiley says, “The National Association of Black Journalists of Los Angeles and the Minority Photo-Journalism Institute are making a tangible difference in our community by helping students pursue careers in journalism and communications. KBLA ‘Talk 1580’ strongly believes in enlightening, empowering and encouraging tomorrow’s reporters, editors and potential talk radio hosts. Hopefully, our scholarships make a difference.”

• WLBT anchor and meteorologist Barbie Bassett is no longer with the Jackson, Miss., NBC station after racially insensitive comments. In early March, Bassett was speaking with her fellow anchors on air about Snoop Dogg’s latest business venture, Snoop Cali Blanc, a new wine in his wine label. In response to a comment about putting a Snoop Dogg tattoo on her shoulder, Bassett said, “Fo shizzle, my nizzle.” Bassett is white. Charlamagne tha God defended Bassett as he discussed the situation on The Breakfast Club. “She might be old. She probably has no idea nizzle is a derivative of the N-word. That’s not a fireable offense. I hope she sues.”
