The Talk of Chicago WVON 1690 Welcomes The Black Information Network and Roland Martin

Black news and talk station WVON 1690-AM (Midway Broadcasting Corporation) will add the BIN: Black Information Network from iHeartRadio to the station's programming line-up. The 24/7 national audio news service was launched by iHeartMedia on June 30th. WVON will be the first non-iHeartRadio station to carry BIN, although it will be aired outside of its main programming schedule. WVON will continue to carry local news and their main talk show lineup for most of their broadcast day.

In the Chicago area BIN: Black Information Network is also being carried on the HD-2 channel of V103 (WVAZ 102.7-FM) for 24 hours a day. WVON's move to carry BIN also marks a sort of homecoming for Roland Martin.

The now nationally known political pundit and journalist recently signed on to the Black Information Network for commentary. His multi-platform program and podcast “Roland Martin Unfiltered” can now be heard on the iHeartPodcast Network on the iHeartRadio app and also watched on YouTube.

Before Martin's work on CNN and TV ONE, he was a contributor on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, replacing Tavis Smiley in 2008. From October 2005 to October 2008, he served as a radio talk show host for WVON, first as mid-day host and later as morning drive host.

He is the former executive editor/general manager of the Chicago Defender, one of the nation’s most historic Black newspaper. Martin launched the first Black news source audio and video podcast in 2005 and 2006 at the Defender.

More news...On Sunday 107.5 WBLS weekend host LaDawn Black announced she was moving on to a new opportunity and leaving the station. Black made a surprise return to radio this week at her old stomping grounds as a guest host on The AM Clique Morning Show this week on 92Q (WERQ-FM Baltimore). LaDawn hosted the very popular night show 'The Love Zone' until 2013 when she moved over to sister Adult R&B station Magic 95.9 as midday host.

iHeart's Power 99 (WUSL-FM Philadelphia) midday host Cappuchino exits the station. She's been with the station since 2012. 'Way Up with Angela Yee' is now heard on Power 99 as one of the 30 affiliates that carry the syndicated program across the country.

Questlove went to Instagram to celebrate the word “jawn” being recognized as an official word in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The dialectic term is native to his hometown. In Philadelphia and Eastern PA, “jawn” evolved as a variant of “joint,” originally denoting a place. “Jawn” has been used to describe almost anything that one need not or cannot give a specific name to. Suddenly jawn has become not cool to use.
