100.3 WRNB Is Now 'R&B and Hip Hop' As 103.9 Under New Ownership is Set to Air KYW Newsradio Next Week

WRNB in Philadelphia is joining forces with it's sister station WPHI 103.9 to create a "new" format that will combine both R&B and Hip Hop. The format will air on both stations for one week.

Parent company Urban One/Radio One will no longer own 103.9 FM as of November 23 in a swap deal with Entercom also known as Radio.com. Entercom will broadcast, for the first time in its 55 year history, KYW Newsradio 1060 AM on the 103.9 FM frequency. Until then Radio One will simultaneously broadcast the new programming on both 100.3 and 103.9.

Meanwhile the Adult R&B format of 100.3 RNB will now be heard on the WRNB HD2 channel. Radio One Philadelphia also features Classix 107.9 with Praise Philly channel on 107.9 HD2.

The Hip Hop format has seen dismal ratings as Hip Hop 103.9 and prior to that as Boom 103.9. The ratings for R&B of the 90's and 2000's format on 100.3 FM are much better, but their best performing station has been Classix 107.9.

Here's the official lineup on 100.3

But as far as the radio business goes, abandoning the Hip Hop format in a large market like Philadelphia was not an option. Despite its ratings Hip Hop sells better than R&B from the 90's and 00's. (Was this Radio One's plan initially when they constructed the deal with Entercom?) We will see if the new 100.3 will tweak their playlist to appeal to a broader base. With the move the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and The D.L. Hughley Show will end their run on 100.3 as well as the station's only local personality Mina SayWhat. She can continue to be heard on Sirius XM Channel 46 The Heat.

Radio One has seen many format changes and station flips throughout its history in Philadelphia and between it's stations on 100.3, 103.9, and 107.9. Their most successful run of any format was the Hip Hop and R&B on 100.3 The Beat. In 2011, WRNB featuring Tom Joyner Morning Show took over 100.3 and The Beat morphed into a Philly version of Hot 107.9.

With this move they have essentially returned that format back to 100.3. The station featured well known morning radio personalities Charlamagne tha god; Jonesy aka Miss Jones; Star and Buc Wild; Monie Love, Pooch, and Laiya at one time or another.

Perhaps a return to that branding may work once again for Radio One.
