100.3 WRNB Is Now 'R&B and Hip Hop' As 103.9 Under New Ownership is Set to Air KYW Newsradio Next Week
The Hip Hop format has seen dismal ratings as Hip Hop 103.9 and prior to that as Boom 103.9. The ratings for R&B of the 90's and 2000's format on 100.3 FM are much better, but their best performing station has been Classix 107.9.
But as far as the radio business goes, abandoning the Hip Hop format in a large market like Philadelphia was not an option. Despite its ratings Hip Hop sells better than R&B from the 90's and 00's. (Was this Radio One's plan initially when they constructed the deal with Entercom?) We will see if the new 100.3 will tweak their playlist to appeal to a broader base. With the move the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and The D.L. Hughley Show will end their run on 100.3. The Morning Hustle with Headkrack and The Quicksilva Show with Dominique Da Diva will air in morning and afternoon drive.
Radio One has seen many format changes and station flips throughout its history in Philadelphia and between it's stations on 100.3, 103.9, and 107.9. Their most successful run of any format was the Hip Hop and R&B on 100.3 The Beat. In 2011, WRNB featuring Tom Joyner Morning Show took over 100.3 and The Beat morphed into a Philly version of Hot 107.9.
With this move they have essentially returned that format back to 100.3. The station featured well known morning radio personalities Charlamagne tha god; Jonesy aka Miss Jones; Star and Buc Wild; Monie Love, Pooch, and Laiya at one time or another.
Perhaps a return to that branding may work once again for Radio One.
