Lauren Johnson Named New Evening Anchor on ABC 11 Eyewitness News in Raleigh-Durham

ABC11 has named Lauren Johnson as its new evening co-anchor, bringing a veteran journalist from the Philadelphia market to replace Tisha Powell who retired from the news business to spend more time with her family.

Johnson comes to Raleigh from Fox 29 News, where she anchored the weekend edition of “Good Day Philadelphia.” In her time at the station, she covered the Democratic National Convention, a fatal Amtrak derailment, the pope’s visit and both Bill Cosby trials.

She joins co-anchor Steve Daniels on the Eyewitness News team at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., along with the 10 p.m. newscast on CW22.

“I’m beyond thrilled to plant permanent roots here and find my new home,” Johnson said in an email Monday. “Just last week, I saw the headline about the area being ranked No. 2 on a “best places to live” list and I am not at all surprised. I am inspired by the work being done in the Tri-cities and thrilled to meet and know the visionaries bravely guiding the area into the future.”

On Instagram Lauren wrote:

It’s happening...very fast, and to say I’m excited is an extreme understatement. ☺️

Just last week, I saw a headline saying Raleigh-Durham was ranked No. 2 on a list of “best places to live.”

God, your timing is impeccable, your blessings are beyond measure, and your grace gets me choked up! 🙏🏽 For 18 years, I have hustled my way from college to Orlando, twice, Memphis, Philly, and now to Raleigh. If someone would have told me freshman year of college that failing Pre-Med biology and chemistry would lead me here, I wouldn’t have believed it. God’s plans are always bigger and better. 🙌🏽

Rob Elmore and Bervette Carree, thank you for believing in me and trusting me with such a big responsibility in Raleigh. I’m excited and privileged to join the @abcnews & @disney family under your leadership.

@traciwilkessmith1, there are not enough “thank yous” for the countless calls, texts and emails we have exchanged over the last several years. You confidently guided me here, as we carefully plotted my next move, discussed my future in the business, and my laid out my options. Thank you for being a voice of reason, thank you for your patience, thank you for always hearing me out, and thank you for believing in me.

To my predecessor @tishapowell, you’re a class act and I’m fully aware of the big shoes I have to fill. You set the bar high, and I hope to keep it there. Wishing you well as journey back home closer to family. ✨

@steve_daniels_abc11, I’m ready for the adventure together! Grabbing you by the hand with confidence you’ll be showing me the way. 📺

To my new colleagues at @abc11_wtvd, I have a lot to learn from all of you and I’m ready for the lessons! I’m taking lots of notes. 📝

To all of my dear friends and family, thank you for pulling me out of the mud, for cheering me on, for supporting me loudly & proudly, for keeping my secrets, for taking my calls, and for just being there along the way! 🖤

Philly, I hate goodbyes. They make me cry! You will live in my heart forever. I will never forget the warm welcome I received in 2014. I will miss you dearly...but I’m forever a Philly jawn. 💔

Raleigh, see you soon...with a big smile and happy heart. 😘

• WLBT anchor and meteorologist Barbie Bassett is no longer with the Jackson, Miss., NBC station after racially insensitive comments. In early March, Bassett was speaking with her fellow anchors on air about Snoop Dogg’s latest business venture, Snoop Cali Blanc, a new wine in his wine label. In response to a comment about putting a Snoop Dogg tattoo on her shoulder, Bassett said, “Fo shizzle, my nizzle.” Bassett is white. Charlamagne tha God defended Bassett as he discussed the situation on The Breakfast Club. “She might be old. She probably has no idea nizzle is a derivative of the N-word. That’s not a fireable offense. I hope she sues.”
